A Few Tips For Living in Thornhurst PA

A little wisdom from my time in “the Hurst”

Thornhurst PA is a quiet little town next to the Lehigh River that is surrounded by state game lands and state forests. I have lived here since 2009 and over the course of my time here I gathered some wisdom that I wish to impart to my readers, so here are a few tips for living in Thornhurst (should you find yourself to be so lucky).

  1. Make sure you have an efficient heat source for winter. It can get pretty cold in the winter and baseboard heat is both inefficient and expensive – make sure you have a primary source of heat that isn’t going to break the bank. Something like a wood stove or pellet stove, maybe a propane gas system or fireplace, and even those ductless mini-split units. Baseboard heat will warm the house up, but that same heat will burn a whole in the pocket you keep your money in as well so best to find something more efficient.
  2. Make sure you’re ready for July 4th. Thornhurst’s annual “Redneck Parade” on July 4th is an event that shuts down a section of the main road into and out of town for about an hour or so while neighbors get out on their tractors, grab some beer, and have a little parade down Bear Lake Road. It’s a fun time and something most of the town looks forward to on the Fourth of July but make sure you have everything you need ahead of time because you don’t want to be stuck behind the parade while trying to get out to civilization.
  3. Make time to hike in the Fall. It is so beautiful up here when Fall Foliage is in full swing and it doesn’t last long. There are a lot of sweet hiking trails to enjoy back in Thornhurst (my personal favorite is probably the Pine Hill Vista for the views from the observation platform, but they are all solid fun).

The first tip is a bit more practical than the others, I realize that. You must know I wrote this article with a smile on my face. I’ve lived in Thornhurst for over 15 years and have no plans to leave anytime soon.
