Today is the one I’ve been waiting for – a crisp, chilly morning that calls for a hoodie for those of us heading outside at dawn. It’s not quite chilly enough for the doggos to don their doggy sweaters unless you have a smaller pooch, but for us humans with no natural coat of our own it’s time to bundle up a bit.
While some people dread the incoming cold season in the Poconos, I accept it – you can’t have winter without fall and I love fall. The smell of the leaves that drift slowly to Earth as it mixes with nearby chimney smoke that surfs a crisp breeze across the mountain gives me nostalgic feelings that take me back to this time of year when I was a kid – football, school starting, earlier sunsets coupled with the Halloween season to make horror movies and scary stories more exciting. All things I still enjoy, especially now that it isn’t me going to school but my squad of spawns.
Soon the morning dew will freeze up and create a dull sparkle on the tall grass and pine needles to make visual evidence of the temperature, but for now you have to feel it to know it. And I felt it this morning, and thus the countdown to Halloween has officially begun.
